Ulu Jelai Hydroelectricity Project

As far as I concern, Ulu Jelai Hydroelectricity Project to be completed by 2014. Are we confident this project can be fully commissioning 3 years from nowaday? I am not sure but will update later on if I have the information. But I still believe they can manage it.

TNB to build gas-fired power plant in Sabah

SINGAPORE: Malaysia's national power producer Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) (5347) plans to build a 300-megawatt gas-fired power plant in Sabah, chief executive Officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said yesterday.

The plan to build a gas-based plant comes after Malaysia's federal and Sabah state governments scrapped a plan to build a coal-fired power plant.

Che Khalib said TNB has received in-principle approval to build the plant.

"It will be a gas-fired plant to replace the coal-based one that was being planned. We are looking to do it either through piped gas of LNG."
The company is currently assessing whether piping in the gas from another part of the state or importing it in its chilled form as liquefied natural gas was the best option economically, he added.

TNB said he expects to mitigate the impact of rising coal prices on the company's bottom line by securing long-term supply contracts with mines in Australia, Indonesia and South Africa.

He ruled out taking ownership in any of them. "We don't believe in owning mines," Che Khalib said.

TNB had in January warned of greater pressure on its margins for the rest of the year on skyrocketing price of coal.

In a worst case scenario, TNB's 2011 earnings would be 20 per cent lower than 2010, although Che Khalib said he expected coal prices to moderate after February.

About 40 per cent of the company's power supply is coal-fired.

Despite growing imports of LNG, Che Khalib expects Malaysia to remain a next exporter of the super-cooled gas for the next 20 years, he said. - Reuters

How a Nuclear Power Plant Works

A visual understanding of how energy is harvested during a Nuclear Reaction.

If the steam coming out of the towers was radioactive then all people around the tower would die. Steam can 't be radioactive unless mixed with radiation. Which would not happen in a nuclear power plant.

The energy is created when the heat coming from the nuclear reaction heats up water and directs it towards a turbine. This turbine turns and generates electricity to power things.

Ashcroft Low Pressure Gauge

Ashcroft Low Pressure Gauge
  • # 2½" and 3½" dial size
  • # Glass-filled polysulfone case material
  • # Beryllium copper diaphragm
  • # Brass Socket
  • # Wetted materials of beryllium copper, brass, polysulfone and RTV silicone

The Ashcroft® Type 1490 low pressure diaphragm gauge is designed to measure pressure from 10 in.H2O to 15psi, both positive and negative pressures. This gauge uses a very sensitive diaphragm capsule to measure low pressure and vacuum.

The gauge is specifically designed for use whenever the pressure medium is a gas that is not corrosive to beryllium copper, brass, polysulfone and RTV silicone. Typical applications are, but not limited to, vacuum pumps, gas leak detectors, air compressors, air filters, gas burners, gas measurement, vacuum ovens, suction regulators and respirators.

TNB awards RM2.15bil jobs for Ulu Jelai project

PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has signed two agreements worth some RM2.15bil for its Ulu Jelai hydroelectric project.

The company said the first agreement was with SMEC International Pty Ltd and SMEC (M) Sdn Bhd consortium, which would provide detailed engineering design for the main civil works, engineering design review for electrical and mechanical works, project management and site supervision.

The contract value was A$22.1mil and RM31.1mil, which was equivalent to RM99.6mil at the prevailing exchange rates, it told Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

The second agreement is with Tindakan Mewah Sdn Bhd and Salini Costruttori SpA consortium. Under this contract, the consortium will be responsible for the main civil, electrical and mechanical works.

The main civil works consist of the construction of a dam, two water-transfer tunnels and an underground power house.

TNB said the electrical and mechanical works involved the design, manufacture, erection, testing and commissioning of two power generation plant, each with a capacity of 186MW, and the associated electrical and mechanical equipment.

It said the value of the second contract was 307 million euros and RM818.1mil, which was equivalent to RM2.05bil at the prevailing exchange rates.

The company said the contract period for the development of the Ulu Jelai hydroelectric project was five years, during which the payment to the contractors would be made in accordance with the progress.

The project cost will potentially result in an increase in TNB's net assets by about 7.1%.

TNB said the project was expected to be completed by July 2016.

Government Likely To Decide On Concessionaire For Second Coal-Fired Power Plant In June

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The government is likely to decide on the concessionaire for the second 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in June this year, says Energy Commission chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali.

He said the commission has issued the request for proposals from MMC Corp Bhd's unit, Malakoff Corp Bhd, and Jimah Energy Ventures Sdn Bhd with regard to the plant.

The sites for the plant would either be at Tanjung Bin in Johor, owned by MMC Corp Bhd or Jimah in Negeri Sembilan owned by Jimah Energy Ventures.

"We gave them until April this year to submit their proposals and we will do the analysis to decide on which one (the site)," Ahmad Tajuddin told reporters after a luncheon talk on alternative energy, organised by the Federation of Public Listed Companies Bhd, here Thursday.

Ahmad Tajuddin said the new plant was needed because the initial 1,600MW power to be generated by the Bakun hydroelectric station in Sarawak would not come to Peninsular Malaysia as planned in 2015.

"The immediate plan is to make sure that the gap left by Bakun is replaced. These coal-fired power plants would fill the gap," he said.

He said the first 1,000MW coal-fired power plant has been awarded to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), adding that TNB was in the final stages of making deciding on the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

"The first plant is expected to commence operation in the first quarter of 2015 while the second plant will be in the first quarter of 2016.

"A 1,000MW coal plant will cost between RM3 billion and RM4 billion," he said.

Ahmad Tajuddin said new power plants would be built as the electricity demand was expected to grow by an average 3.4 per cent from 2011 to 2020.

"With growing energy demand and declining fossil fuel reserves, the country is looking to enhance and encourage the usage of renewable energy," he said.

He said the government was taking initiatives to secure future energy supply, such as diversifying sources of fossil fuel supply by seeking a more balanced generation fuel mix.

"Other initiatives are strengthening and expanding fuel and electricity supply infrastructures towards regional interconnection, exploring and building capacity for the nuclear option and promoting renewable energy resources via through enhanced fiscal incentives, grants and subsidies," he said.

He said the country aimed to achieve the target of six per cent of the electricity generated from renewable energy in 2015 from less than one per cent now.
