I just surfing internet today and found that this non contact handheld infrared thermometer price just about $30 (convert to RM is less than RM100). Surprise! Inexpensive and very surprise to me because I think the price is more than 1k.

What to do with this stuff? The infrared is used for sensing temperature. Just aim to something this non contact handheld infrared thermometer properly and you will get the temperature result very fast. But sometimes people call this equipment is laser thermometer. Actually nothing to do with the laser. It's not a laser because laser cannot be used for sensing temperature.

How it works? Point out the thermometer to the item to be measured. The closer you are, the better result or more accurate you get. But it is still can give a good reading from a distance.

Thermometer measure the infrared radiation to calculate the object temperature while the laser pointer as a guide to the right direction. Normally

The traditional pressure gauge is just to indicate the pressure of the process and they are too sensitive with condensation and vibration. That’s why nowadays we have a glycerin filled pressure gauge in the market to cater the problem.

The lifespan of glycerin filled pressure gauge compared with the standard pressure gauge is more longer because it has a fewer moving parts in the glass. The housing is filled up with viscous oil. This oil filling is beneficial to dampen pointer vibration and make sure that humid ambient air restricted to enter. As the result the water cannot be condensed and accumulate in the glass.

Most of the equipments that we still used Foxboro (manufacturer) are transmitter. Pressure transmitter, temperature, level transmitter and flow transmitter (less). But the most which are still used in my working area - power plant is pressure transmitter. If we can go back to my post long-long time ago, I have said that the supports from the manufacture is less. That's is why people changed to another brand which can give technical support to their industry.

Today I am not sure whether they have improve their technical support team or not. But nowadays, if Foxboro would not do something, I believe they already closed their business. Maybe they have done something to avoid such thing happened.

How about at your workplace? Did they give their full support and full commitment at your power plant?

Pool Heat Exchanger

The SEC Pool Exchanger Line of heat exchangers is designed to perform at high fluid velocities with low pressure drops.It has a helical coiled tube design that makes it distinctive from other shell and tube heat exchangers on the market today. This unique design enables efficient heat transfer performance, and allows for diversity in its applications.

To maximize the performance of the Pool Exchanger Line of heat exchangers, the product should be installed in a counter-current flow method, as shown below in Figure 1 below. The hot, or heating, fluid flows through the tube side. The cold, or heated, fluid flows through the shell side.

Example: for swimming pool applications, the pool water is to flow through the shell side, and the boiler water is to flow through the tube side.

The Pool Exchanger Line come with mounting brackets to assist in their installation and ease of use.

Under no circumstances should there be any pulsating of fluids in the system, this causes vibrations that could damage the structural integrity of the pool exchanger. The system should be designed to prevent the unit from encountering pressure shocks and rapid temperature changes.

TNB keen on Bidding For Manjung Block 2

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is interested in bidding for the second block of the 1,000-MW coal-fired power plant in Manjung if it is given the opportunity to participate, said president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh .

“We are looking forward to participating if the opportunity arises but at the moment, there is no decision yet on the matter,” Che Khalib told reporters yesterday at the TNB Majlis Mesra Aidilfitri.

The Government had in August offered TNB to develop the first unit of 1,000-MW coal-fired power plant at its present power plant site in Manjung, Perak.

TNB is reported to have said the plant was expected to start operations on March 1, 2015.

Che Khalib said TNB was committed to deliver the first block of the power plant and that if the first 1,000-MW project was sufficient for TNB, the group might give the opportunity to other independent power producers to bid.

“The Energy Commission is expected to call for tenders for the second unit of 1,000-MW coal-fired power plant before the end of the year,” he said. “As for TNB, the most important thing is that we want to make sure there will be competitive bidding.”

He said with competitive bidding, it should be able to secure competitive rates unlike what had happened in the past.

“In the past all the independent power producers were given their deals in Peninsular Malaysia through direct negotiation process,” he said.

“I am quite confident that by having competitive bidding, we should be able to secure very competitive rates for the nation,” Che Khalib added.

What is heat exchanger?


* Radiator is a heat exchanger. What happen to your car if the heat exchanger not function? Then you will face the problem in the pic above.

A heat exchanger is a device or a special built device to transfer heat from one medium to another. Normally heat exchanger are used in many applications such in space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petroleum refineries and sewage treatment. One of simple example heat exchanger application in daily used is radiator in a car which is the heat from the hot space engine oil will be cooled down by the radiator cooler or water flow through out the coils.


Radiators are the heat exchangers that are using thermal energy concept transfer for cooling and heating purpose. The coolant and air used to cool the heat temperature and the radiators will loses this heat to atmosphere.

TNB offered to develop 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has been offered by the Government to develop the first unit of 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant on its existing power plant site in Manjung Perak.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, TNB said the concession was to build, own and operate the coal-fired plant.

It said the plant was expected to commence operation on March 1, 2015.

Earlier this month, Tajuddin had said that three sites for power plants were shortlisted by the Energy Commission for the Government to consider. These were the existing Tanjung Bin power plant in south Johor (owned by MMC Corp Bhd), Jimah plant in Negri Sembilan (Jimah Power) and Manjung power plant in Perak (TNB) – for the new plant.

The offer by the Government to TNB has come earlier than expected as the Government was supposed to make its decision on the suggested sites only by next January.

TNB said the development of the project was subject to approval from Department of Environment (DOE) in relation to the detailed environmental impact assessment (DEIA) and EC’s approval.

It added that TNB would ensure compliance to the DEIA study in order to meet the latest clean air regulations (CAR).

The use of the supercritical technology would considerably reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission, particulate emissions, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxides emissions with the added benefit of much reduced coal consumption due to the higher efficiency of the supercritical boiler, it said.

“We will comply with all the requirements of CAR and obtain the necessary approval for the DEIA from the DOE, before commencing construction of this strategic power plant, TNB said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government needs to decide soon on the details of a new coal-fired power plant aimed at resolving a predicted power shortage in the peninsula in 2015, said Energy Commission chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali.

“There is an urgency to finalise the project. There will be a power shortage in 2015 as initially 1,600MW is supposed to be transmitted to the peninsula from Bakun dam.

“However, the (1,600MW supply) plan has been scrapped thus the shortage and the need for a new plant,” Tajuddin said yesterday on the sidelines of Energy Forum 2010: Securing A Sustainable Energy Future for Malaysia.

"We (the commission) are trying to make sure a fast decision will be made,” he said, adding that the decision on the project, including the company that will undertake it, would be made by the Government.

Electricity consumption per capita in Malaysia now stands at about 3,412 kilowatt-hours per annum, significantly higher than most developing countries, but still below the average in developed countries.

It is projected to more than double to reach 7,571 kWh per person in 2030, higher than that of the Apec region average at 6,833 kWh per person.

Tajuddin said the commission was currently working on site proposals for the new coal-fired power plant.

“We have a few options but due to the limited gas supply in the long term, we have decided on a coal-fired plant,” he said, adding that such plant could be completed in 42 months.

Tajuddin said the commission had shortlisted three sites – Tanjung Bin power plant in south Johor (owned by MMC Corp Bhd), Jimah plant in Negri Sembilan (Jimah Power) and Manjung power plant in Perak (Tenaga Nasional Bhd) – for the new plant.

“These are some of the sites that we have identified to ensure a station capable of producing up to 1,000MW will be able to start generating power by 2015,” he said.

Tajuddin said there might be a need for higher capacity or more plants later but initially, the Government would choose one of the three shortlisted sites for the first plant.

“We can build a new station at other places but due to the lack of time, we have to build it fast to address the shortage. In future, we may build at other places.

“It will take more time if we are to build it at other sites. We need to conduct site investigation and site preparation, among others,” he said.

Earlier, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) president and CEO Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh told StarBiz the company was studying to expand the generation capacity of its coal-fired power plant in Manjung, Perak.

This is to ensure that its electricity reserves margin does not drop below 20% by 2016.

Meanwhile, MMC Corp Bhd may propose to the Government to expand its Tanjung Bin power plant by 800MW to increase its power supply in the peninsula by 2015.

On the Renewable Energy Act, Khalib expects it to be tabled in Parliament by the year-end.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Nuclear Agency director-general Datuk Dr Daud Mohamad was quoted by Bernama as saying that the country’s first nuclear power plant may be built on an uninhabited island.

He said the agency had studied five or six sites in the peninsula, of which one or two were islands.

Pre-feasibility studies, conducted by TNB in consultation with the agency, is ongoing while the full feasibility studies will be carried out after the site had been identified.

On the cost of building it, Daud said a 1,000MGW nuclear power plant would require US$2bil to US$3bil.

PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is undertaking studies to expand the generation capacity of its coal-fired power plant in Manjung, Perak, to ensure that its electricity reserves margin does not drop below 20% by 2016, said president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.

“If power generated from Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd does not come in time, we will need additional sources of energy in 2015. So, expanding the Manjung facility would be the logical thing to do.

“We are doing this in anticipation. We have no choice but to start planning now. If we don’t do the plant-up in time, it will be too late come 2016,” Khalib told StarBiz in a phone interview.

TNB is supposed to lease the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam via Sarawak Hidro.

Khalib said if Sarawak Hidro did not deliver come 2015, and there were also no new sources of energy, TNB’s reserves margins would drop to below 20% by 2016.

He said the safety margin for TNB’s electricity reserves margin should be not less than 20%.

Meanwhile, Bernama quoted Khalib as saying that the consultant for the preliminary study of the plan would be appointed this week and the study would take six months.

Analysts aren’t surprised with the development plan for the Manjung plant, which is owned by TNB subsidiary TNB Janamanjung Sdn Bhd. In fact, they believe there will be other coal plant expansion, possibly at Tanjung Bin in south Johor and Jimah in Negri Sembilan.

Coal seems to be the best alternative to meet TNB’s electricity demand as it is still considered a relatively affordable commodity. While gas may be a cleaner form of energy, it will continue being in short supply until the liquefied natural gas regasification plant is built in 2013.

“Even then, if gas is bought at international prices, gas-fired (power) generation will cost more than coal-fired generation and TNB may prefer new coal generation,” said OSK Research Sdn Bhd research head Chris Eng.

Meanwhile, the construction cost of a hydropower plant is very high. It was reported that TNB is seeking to increase the Manjung plant’s capacity by 2,000 MW (1,000 MW x 2) from its current capacity of 2,100 MW (700 MW x 3), at an estimated cost of at least RM6bil to RM7bil.

“If this piece of news had broken a year ago, we would have been sceptical, given the big plans to bring Sarawak’s hydropower to Peninsular Malaysia via the Bakun Energy Transmission Grid,” said Eng.

Another power analyst said that while TNB currently had sufficient reserves margin, it still needed other sources of energy.

At present, only the 250 MW Ulu Terengganu and 372MW Ulu Jelai hydropower dams are scheduled to be operational in 2014 or 2015, and these will not be sufficient.

The power analyst added that Bakun’s first undersea cable was expected to be ready in 2015, and the second in 2017.

“If the cable breaks down, what will happen to the electricity supply? Given the uncertainty, it isn’t too surprising that TNB is expanding the coal plant,” he said.

Given the rumoured scale of the coal plant expansion, Eng believes that even if tenders were called next year, the plant can only be completed in 2014. By then, the first-generation independent power producers (IPPs) will be close to their expiry of power purchase agreements (PPA) in 2015 and 2016.

As Janamanjung is now structured as an IPP, Eng believes that a fourth-generation PPA will be signed with TNB if the expansion goes ahead.

TNB will release today its second-quarter results to Feb 28.

Learn on How Nuclear Power Station Operate
