Introduction to Pressure Transducers

Pressure Transducer

What is a pressure transducer? A pressure transducer is a transducer that converts pressure into an analog electrical signal. Although there are various types of pressure transducers, one of the most common is the strain-gage base transducer.

The conversion of pressure into an electrical signal is achieved by the physical deformation of strain gages which are bonded into the diaphragm of the pressure transducer and wired into a wheatstone bridge configuration. Pressure applied to the pressure transducer produces a deflection of the diaphragm which introduces strain to the gages. The strain will produce an electrical resistance change proportional to the pressure.

Function

Process pressure: Level and pressure measurements

Measuring principle

The pressure measuring cell converting the pressure into a signal which can be evaluated electrically is the heart of the pressure transmitter. This pressure-dependent signal is converted by the integrated electronics into a standardized output signal. Different sensors are used to detect the pressure. The ceramic cell characterizes by an excellent long-term stability and high overload resistance. The metal cell covers even higher measuring ranges and use stainless steel as diaphragm material.

Endress+Hauser Electromagnetic Flowmeter Promag 53

This is a new electromagnetic flowmeter delivered yesterday by Endress+Hauser personal and will be installed at the electrolyser chlorination plant pipe for flow measurement. The consequences of flow switch failure frequently and repeated recently at this electrolyser pipe which cause the Electro Chlorination Plant trip.

This situasion leads to several trial units of many brands to avoid this happen and happen again. Anyway, this one also a trial unit and if the result success will be considered.

Druck 1830 Level Pressure Sensor at The Sodium Hypochloride Tank

On last Friday, I went around power plant to check some instrumentations. This sodium hypochloride tank actually located behind the ECP and it's a part of the chlorine process. We have two hypochloride tank in our power plant and the tanks are parallel. Meaning that the level should be the same level except the operators close the equalize valve.

PTX 1830 Druck Level Sensor

This is the original level sensor that we have at the hypochloride tank. The range is 10mH2O g. No isolating valve was installed to the level sensor which cause us problem to change during tank in operating.

Foxboro Pressure Transmitter

While this is another option that we used to replace the faulty level sensor. This is only temporary but currently it is also not available or cannot be used because the application is not suitable with strong chlorine which caused the damaged to diaphragm.

I am not so sure about the specification and I will try find it later. So don't forget to come back to know more about this transducer.

Thermo Fisher Scientific SX40

It is already more than one month after I posting about this simple Flow Switch at the Electrochlorination Plant. Then it failed for a few times which we need to do the repeat order the old flow switch even though it is easily damaged by strong chemical or specifically chlorine. Last week one of OEM parts and specialize about this product do the testing. Currently it has shown positive signal meaning that the thing can work there.

"The Polysonics SX40 is a dedicated Doppler flowmeter which utilizes a patented digital signal processing technique to determine the flow of liquids that contain particulate or air bubbles. The meter incorporates clamp-on sensors which are easily installed for sludge management in sewage treatment plants and industrial applications such as slurry and effluent monitoring."

"The Hydra SX40 is designed as a permanently installed flow meter. Its large backlit graphics display provides excellent visibility even in poorly lit environments. As well as flow rate and flow total, a flow trend is available to quickly analyze flow over a period of time. This is especially useful for analyzing pump cycling activity. Standard outputs include 4-20mA, RS232 serial interface and up to four programmable relays. The flow meter also incorporates a 90,000-point data logger."
We will test this product for a whole month to make sure that this kind of new proposal instrumentation or transducer can be worked in the very corrosive environment.
