Chocolate eaters may have healthier hearts

Older women who eat more chocolate are less likely to develop heart problems over a nearly 10 year period, new study findings report.

Women older than 70 who ate chocolate at least once a week were 35% less likely to be hospitalised or die from heart disease over the course of study, and nearly 60% were less likely to be hospitalised or die from heart failure.

Mill Coal Grinder

Vertical Mill Coal Grinder

Vertical Mill Coal Grinder

Coal is widely used in the world. One of the major usage of coal is a major contribution to combustion at steel industries and thermal power plants.

Basically consumption of coal thermal plant is quite large. Imagine, normally plant with 2000MW using fine coal to generate electricity which the consumption of coal around 10,000 tonne to 15,000 tonne per day. That's why criteria for choosing coal mill is very important to improve utilization of coal.

Coal mill grinder or coal mill crusher is used to crush coal or to make coal in very small size. The coal need to be processed and crushed into different sizes, 0 ~ 25 mm particle size for coal gas stove , 25 ~ 8 mm for steam locomotive, 25 ~ 6 mm for the industrial furnace, and coal power plant requires grain coal of 0 ~ 25mm.

This picture a part of process in thermal power plant. The process is start from the coal inlet and introduce to the mill crusher. The end at the pulverized coal outlet.

Hydro Plant Major Overhaul

Normally hydro plant doing major overhaul around 10 years for a cycle. Why we need such work to be carry out?

The main reason for setting up overhaul is to prevent unscheduled outages from failure of equipment. Since a machine which already run for a long period have lot of wear and tear and need to be treated well to make it last longer.

In order for the overhaul to proceed smoothly and to accomplish all the work required, planning should start well before the overhaul starts.

I am going to prepare roughly on what we have to do or prepare before we can carry out such a big job. Maybe it will takes some time to complete all the checklist. Anyway I will try to find out the data first before write an entry about hydro major overhaul.

DCS Vs SCADA

DCS Vs SCADA

DCS is process oriented: it looks at the controlled process (the chemical plant or whatever) as the centre of the universe, and it presents data to operators as part of its job.

SCADA is data-gathering oriented: the control centre and operators are the centre of its universe. The remote equipment is merely there to collect the data--though it may also do some very complex process control!

A DCS operator station is normally intimately connected with its I/O (through local wiring, FieldBus, networks, etc.). When the DCS operator wants to see information he usually makes a request directly to the field I/O and gets a response. Field events can directly interrupt the system and advise the operator.

SCADA must operate reasonably when field communications have failed. The 'quality' of the data shown to the operator is an important facet of SCADA system operation. SCADA systems often provide special 'event' processing mechanisms to handle conditions that occur between data acquisition periods.

Pergau Hydroelectric 600MW

Pergau Water Intake at Kuala Yong Dam

Hydroelectric dam on the Pergau River in Malaysia, near the Thai border. Building work began in 1991 with money from the UK foreign aid budget. Concurrently, the Malaysian government bought around £1 billion worth of arms from the UK. The suggested linkage of arms deals to aid became the subject of a UK government enquiry from March 1994. In November 1994 a High Court ruled as illegal British foreign secretary Douglas Hurd's allocation of £234 million towards the funding of the dam, on the grounds that it was not of economic or humanitarian benefit to the Malaysian people.

Simcard error

I am going to Celcom Kota Bharu this morning since I have problem with my celcom simcard. The msg received 'sim error' always.

Celcom open their shop today at 09:30 to 12:30 only. Then I need to be there early morning to make sure that whatever it is, my phone can be used.

Saturday just nice... used this oppurtunity because weekdays now become more busy since we are at the end of the year....

What is the Main Inlet Valve?

Main inlet valve or shortly we say MIV is the spherical valve which installed before water enter into spiral casing of the hydro turbine.

Main inlet valve or MIV at hydro power plant.

Water from the dam go to the penstock and before water enter the turbine, MIV is a component in between stop the water for small maintenance purpose in the turbine hall.

New Vibration System - Vibrosystm

Vibrosystm Proximty Probe

Have you ever heard the brand call 'Vibrosystm'? I have never know this brand before but one of my friend told me that the brand is establish one if you comparing with the Bently Nevada.

Is there any body from Malaysia used this brand before? How about the support from Vibrosystm? Is there any local company here that given their service?

Anyway, will try first their product since the alternative (beside Bently Nevade) is more cheaper. And I am sure we need to suit with our budget first.

Even though still hesitate to use the Vibrosystm product, I would like to invite them, give oppurtunity for them to present how good the product they are.

Nokia C6-01 at RM1099

Yesterday I was in Giant Terengganu, found that Nokia C6-01 was selling at RM1099 while at Mydin Mall it was selling at RM1200 price. The different is RM100. But all the softwares is not provided. We need to install the software ourselves. The set is original set from Zitron with 1 year warranty period.

At Giant, a shop sell in cash only. The seller said he only provide the GPS installation while others need to do by ourselves.

I am still thinking whether to buy or not. Buy or not? Buy or not....

More post on New Toyota Corolla Altis 2010

A supertanker is huge and long and changing course takes a while. Toyota has often been compared to this mega seagoing vessel because it has not always been quick in changing strategies or coming out with new product developments. This is not to say that the company is not innovative but its size does not permit it to be nimble like smaller companies which can react more quickly to market situations. But once Toyota has made the decision to 'change course' or respond to a market condition, it does so with 'forcefully' and that's what rivals fear.

The midterm revision to the Corolla could be considered an example of Toyota's 'course change' to restore the class-leading position of the model. Among the best-selling models in the world in terms of sheer numbers produced since it was introduced in 1966, the Corolla is no longer No. 1 in Japan (a position it held for decades) and in most markets, it is also not as dominant as it used to be. Many believe it continues to be popular more because it is a Toyota than because it is a Corolla.

The major upgrade for the current Corolla generation, to be launched in Malaysia at the end of this month, is under the bonnet where a new engine series is introduced across the range and extended to include a 2-litre variant. The ZZ series is replaced by the new all-aluminium ZR series that has dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) to enhance performance across the engine speed range (but the 1.6-litre version does not have ACIS). While the 1.6-litre version (120 ps, 154Nm of torque) continues with a 4-speed automatic transmission, the new 1.8-litre (140 ps, 174Nm of torque) and 2.0-litre (147 ps, 187Nm of torque) Corollas get a 7-speed continuously-variable transmission (Super CVT-i).

Dual VVT-i is an advancement of VVT-i as it provides continuously variable valve timing on the exhaust valves as well. As most readers will know, variable valve timing (VVT) controls valve opening and closing so as to optimize power output and enhance fuel efficiency. Most VVT systems operate only on the intake side but the more expensive cars have had dual VVT for some time. In Toyota's case, the enhanced mechanism was first used in the 1998 Toyota Altezza (Lexus IS) and then became commonplace in the high-end Toyota models and all Lexus models.

The Super CVT-i for the new Corolla 1.8/2.0 is made by a Toyota subsidiary and is said to be a robust steel-belted unit with a fully-electronic hydraulic system.

The exterior looks are unchanged except for the usual alterations in areas like the grille, bumpers and rear lights. In a further effort to 'liven up' the image of the Corolla, a sportier styling theme was used. The Corolla 1.8/2.0 have more open alloy rims with 5 spokes instead of 10 spokes and the Corolla 2.0 gets powerful HID headlights with smoked bezel treatment. A slim rear spoiler is also fitted for this top version.

The interior layout is unchanged but unlike the exterior attempt at sportiness, the cabin has been given more refinement to add a 'luxurious feel'. The wood trim used is said to give a sense of 'real wood' with a darker, less glossy finish. The cheaper versions have fabric upholstery while the two top versions (1.8G/2.0V) have perforated leather.

The steering wheel is changed to the 3-spoke flat-bottomed type (rather like the one in the LF-A supercar) for the Corolla 2.0V which also gets cruise control. This version as well as the 1.8-litre versions have audio control buttons on the steering wheel.
The Optitron instrument panel (1.8G/2.0V) has the same looks but the graphics are slightly changed to give a more '3D' appearance. Illumination has been changed from character illumination to illumination of the whole meter surface. There's also a little ECO light which helps the driver to operate the Corolla more economically.

ESTIMATED PRICES (with insurance and roadtax)
1.6E- RM105,990
1.8E- RM112,990
1.8G- RM122,990
2.0V- RM131,990

Are you left brain or right brain?

Clockwise or anti clockwise?

Is the girl in the picture spinning clockwise or counterclockwise? if you see her spinning clockwise, it means that your left half of the brain, the "logic/analytic" one, is generally (or currently) more active. If you see it counterclockwise, the right one - the emotional/image one. There is a possibility to "switch" the view by your mind!!! Try it, it is for real!!

Bently Nevada BN3300 upgrade to Bently Nevada BN3500 ?

Bently Nevada BN3300 upgrade to Bently Nevada BN3500??

Which one is better? I believe that the new technology should be good and better compared with the old version. Then you should know that BN3500 far better than BN3300.

BN3300 is more traditionally used to monitor that can be optioned to interface to various control system. Still can be used to date but as per GE Bently personal this product is going to be obsolete in 2015. Bently 3300 parts production will slowly in 2013. After that they only will do the repair work instead of parts production.

But there is still option for us to whether to upgrade the BN3300,to BN3500 , buy another competitor vibration monitoring, and lastly buy with a lot of spare parts which can be last for another 20 years???

How about you guys? Which of the option should we choose? For me the answer still to option no.1. Well, we should know that BN3500 series system provides continuous online monitoring for machine protection applications. BN3500 is very capable, reliable and flexible system in market, offering numerous feature and advantages not provided in others system.

I think most of the Bently Nevada user choose this 3500 system since the track record and their good performance known worldwide.

Do you know how long the life spans of a heat exchanger?

Heat Exchanger Life Span

Do you know how long the life spans of a heat exchanger?

Fouling is main reason why the heat exchanger damaged and the life time become shorter. The tube damage was caused by erosion–corrosion induced by two factors:

  • Disturbed flow of water containing suspended solid particles.
  • Chemical composition of water rich in chlorides that resulted in loss of stability of protective cuprous oxide layer.

The best way to maximize the life spans or optimizing of a heat exchanger is to inspect every year and need some cleaning to avoid major failure on the equipment. Monthly cleaning is recommended almost by manufacturer to increase the lifetime of heat exchanger. Most heat exchanger can last very long time.

Genting Sanyen Kuala Langat Selangor

Genting Sanyen Kuala Langat

Genting Sanyen Bhd located at Kuala Langat Selangor. The power plant start operated in 1996 with capacity 808 MW. More details as below:

  • Operator: Alstom for Genting Sanyen Bhd
  • Configuration: 808-MW, 5+1 CCGT with three GT 13E2M gas turbines plus single 6001 and 5001 gas turbines, CHP

Plate Heat Exchanger Cleaning

Heat exchanger is the common equipment you can found in the power plant process. The reasons why I put plate heat exchanger cleaning is to share what is needed to be done on the old or defective plate heat exchanger on my machine.

Sample heat exchanger after cleaning

Pic: Credit to Merusonline cooling water

In order to make heat exchanger function properly, all tubes must be cleaned and free from any debris. Heating and cooling process in the heat exchanger also contribute to debris growth and corrosions, besides dirty water in the pipeline.

Normally what we did on the heat exchanger cleaning is including checking, regasketing, dye penetrant testing, and chemical services and repressing of deformed plates.

Incoterms 2010 (NEW RULES)

A part of procurement knowledges applied in my routine job. Just to share with you all.

The global economy has given business broader access than ever before to markets all over the world. Goods are sold in more countries, in larger quantities, and in greater variety. But as the volume and complexity of global sales increase, so do possibilities for misunderstandings and costly disputes when sale contracts are not adequately drafted.

The INCOTERMS rules, the ICC rules on the use of domestic and international trade terms, facilitate the conduct of global trade. Reference to an Incoterms 2010 rule in sale contract clearly defines the parties’ respective obligations and reduces the risk of legal complications.

Since the creations of the Incoterms rules by ICC in 1936, this globally accepted contractual standard has been regularly updated to keep pace with the development of international trade. The Incoterms 2010 rules take account of the continued spread of customs-free zones, the increased use of electronic communications in business transactions, heightened concern about security in the movement of goods and changes in transport practices. Incoterms 2010 updates and consolidates the ‘delivered’ rules, reducing the total number of rules from 13 to 11, and offers a simpler and clearer presentation of all the rules. Incoterms 2010 is also the first version of the Incoterms rules to make all references to buyers and sellers gender-neutral (adapted from Rajat Gupta, ICC Chairman).

The broad expertise of ICC’s Commission on Commercial Law and Practise, whose membership is drawn from all parts of the world and all trade sectors, ensures that the Incoterms 2010 rules respond to business needs everywhere (adapted from Rajat Gupta, ICC Chairman).

Incoterms rules define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers for the delivery of goods under sale contracts. They are the authoritative rules for determining how costs and risks are allocated to the parties. Incoterms rules are regularly incorporated into sale contracts worldwide and have become part of the daily language of trade.

Incoterms 2010 CONTAINS THE ICC rules for use of the 11 Incoterms trading terms. It takes into account the latest developments in commercial practice and updates and consolidates some of the former rules. All sales contracts should make reference to the Incoterms 2010 rules as the latest version of the Incoterms rules.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) had recently revised the Incoterms rules. The new Incoterms 2010 launced on 27th September is effective worldwide as of 1st January 2011.

Incoterms are interntional rules published by the ICC for the interpretation of trade terms eg EXW, FCA, FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF etc. Importers, Exporters, Bankers, Insurers, Freight Forwarders, Customs Brokers and carries need to be aware of the new changes in Incoterms 2010 which have critical implications to their business especially on the following:
  • Carriage of goods between seller and buyer
  • Export and Import clearance requirements
  • Allocation of costs between seller and buyer
  • Acquisition of transit/cargo insurance
  • Assumption of risks for loss and damages

The changes in the new Incoterms rules are massive, sweeping as well as practical. Four terms under the current Incoterms 2000 were taken out. Two new terms DAT (Delivered At Terminal) and DAP (Delivered At Place) have been added.

Offshore Oil Rigs Mechanical Completion & Commissioning, Including Construction

Rationale for this Workshop

80% of the world's rig-building market is concentrated in Singapore. Consequently, shipyards in Singapore designs and builds 60% of the rowld's jack-up oil rigs.

  • Destruction or damages done to offshore oil rigs due to sucessive hurricanes
  • Many of the current oil rigs had reached their life expectancy and required replacing
  • Recent BP oil spill - many exploration companies rush to replace their old rigs with new ones so as to meet the stricter regulations and rules governing the construction of oil rigs.

However, many of these new-build oil rig projects are delayed due to the commissioning process. Such delays are a threat to the profits of the project and often involve conflicts between the main stakeholders of the project such as:

  • The yard/factory/workshop representing the services company/vendor
  • The construction team of engineers
  • The commissioning team of engineers
  • The operations team and the coming crew of the unit or ship

Reason for Attending

  • Equips delegates with the knowledge to understand and implement efficiently the mechanical completion, commissioning and conflict resolution activities of oil rig units
  • Provide attendees with a more strategic approach to commissioning, along with numerous tools to use throughout the commissioning process
  • Through the workshop, each delegate will improve job performance by attaining
  • Better alignment of mechanical completion & commissioning process steps with stakeholder’sneeds
  • Better commissioning procedures
  • Better mechanical completion
  • Fewer disputes and claims
  • Better project outcomes
  • Essential for all involved parties to understand the entire process, keys to success and what is required of their own roles
  • All materials and exercises are particularly specific to the oil rig industry in Asia to be more relevant to the needs of the delegates
  • Content is developed from both a rig owner’s and shipbuilder’s point of view.
  • Round table discussions are also included so that delegates are actively invited to share their view

Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Project

Pic: Bakun Dam in Sarawak

Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Project is proposed to Terengganu State Government for electric power supply. The hydroelectric project own by Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

The project is set to commence on 2010 and will be completed 2014. This crucial for TNB where the project need to be completed on time since the demand on the power supply expected to increase in 2013 onwards. One more thing is Bakun Project which expected to supply power to Semenanjung will be not realized due to some problem. Maybe the problem rise on the underground sea cabel issue.

More details: TNB to build another hydroelectric Plant in Terengganu.

Depth Micrometer

Micrometer

What is micrometer? A simple meaning can be thickness measurement, an instrument that measures small distances, angles or objects. A micrometer sometimes known as a micrometer screw gauge, is a device used widely in mechanical engineering and machining as well as most mechanical trades for precision measurement, along with other metrological instruments such as dial calipers and vernier calipers.

Depth micrometer

The depth micrometer is used to measure the precise depth of holes, grooves and recesses by using interchangeable rods to accommodate different depth measurements. When using a micrometer, you must make sure the base of the micrometer has a flat, smooth surface to rest on and that it is held firmly in place to endure an accurate measurement.
